Adding search facilities to a web site

A search engine can make your site more attractive and easy to use. This may either search your site internally for topics or search the Web via your site.
Your search engine will need to index and perform key word searching. This can be done by a script saved onto the web owners site or done externally by a connection to a site engine service.
Free services are quite easy to find and often simple to install on the site. Paid services offer more sophistication and are regularly re-indexed by the providers 'spiders'.

Some Typical free search facilities for external web page search

Siva's Search - a JavaScript search. This will link to a number of search engines but will not search internally.

HotPlugins search service for anything on the web. You can have your own logo or use the sponsored form.

Go to Hotplugins

Have a look at a more extensive web directory search from the same source.

Free Search Engines you can use to search your site

FreeFind - a free service provided by a site search service. This can have a variety of forms - site only or World Wide Web + site and has excellent maintenance facilities. It can be revisited and re-indexed regularly.

SearchEngine.com If you paste the code from the page you can use this search

Fluid Dynamics Search Engine
This is stored entirely on the web owners host computer using a Perl script as its main working element. The search can be updated by re-indexing and its working altered by logging onto an admin page set up on line for the search.

Search this site for topics using Fluid Dynamics Search Engine
This can search both internal and external links related to the site or you can set it up to search only certain sections.

In this example Dreamweaver searches the Dreamweaver section and webdevonline searches the entire site
