Managing web sites & Uploading  to the Web

Once you have built your web site you will need to follow a number of steps to get it onto the web

(1) Domain Names

You have to find a home for your web page.
(1) To get this running you need to get a 'domain' name
eg www.learnsouthwest.co.uk

This domain name must be purchased from a
Domain Name reseller company.
The cost is from £5-15 for a .co.uk name and

£25-35 for a .com.
Names are unique and it is likely your first choice will be taken. You can get them free with a 'hosting' package.

ISP Domains - You can usually get a domain name and
web space from an ISP. However it will have their branding on it and may not describe what your site is about. Space varies from 5-unlimitedMB
eg: www.johnsmith.f9.co.uk

Go to Domains page for list of typical resellers in UK

(2) Web Space Hosting

You must have bought the space on a company's servers in order to store your web site

The domain name seller will sell you
space with your domain on their 'web server' (where the registered programs run from). The amount of space depends on how much you are prepared to pay, but there are variations, so shop around!  You need upwards of 50 MB for a decent sized site.

Your space is rented for a period of time (either 1 or 2 years) for a fixed cost.

(3) File Transfer Protocol FTP

This is the system used to transfer files to the web.
Hosting companies/ISP's have their own FTP servers
and will give you the address of the server and folder
into which to transfer files.

Have all your site prepared and working. Go online and open up the FTP program and connect to the FTP server.

There are two possible approaches
(1) Use FTP facilities within an editor eg FrontPage or Dreamweaver

(2) Get a specialist FTP program. You can get free ones from the Internet or a magazine.  These will not have the same sophistication as a paid program, but will do the job effectively.

Look at this list of typical programs available free.

Go to Web building for details of resources available

(4) Using FrontPage to upload your files

The program has built in transfer facilities.  To find out how to use these go to the help page below
