This web page was made using a table split into 4 columns with 2 rows.
One of the columns was then removed in the top row to create 3 columns in the top row

The table has a cell spacing of 2 and a cell padding of 6 to make the text have a gap from cell margins

There are some background colours but no borders

Now look at the layout of page Layout 3. Here two of the cells are simply used for spacing.

Text Formatting

The text on the page has been formatted as follows:

(1) Body Text
A sans serif font (Arial) has been applied and the size is 3 (12pt).

(2) Headings
Headings use a serif font (Times New Roman) and sizes are Heading 1 for banner and heading 3 for the sub- headings.

(3) Navigation
These use a sans serif font size 2 (10 points)

Laying Out Text

Text is left justified. When typing in text it will created automatic line breaks when you reach the edge of the cell.

Text can be justified, underlined, emphasized or highlighted with a background colour. This is done as in as in a word processor by dragging over it and using the formatting tool bar.

Underlining is used for linking on web pages and so should be used with care.

Borders with coloured edges and backgrounds can be put around text or headings by dragging over to select text and then using Format menu 'Borders and Shading'.

The text is separated by paragraph tags <p> which leaves a gap in the text.

The cell padding and cell spacing contribute to spacing out the blocks of writing. This use of 'whitespace' is quite important for legibility.
