Understanding Graphics

 

 

What kind of graphics can I add to the page?

The main things you may wish to add to your page are pictures, videos, graphic images and animated gifs

The picture below is a .gif.  Gifs are images containing relatively simple structure and few colours.  Much clip art is produced by 'vector' based art packages and saved as .gif format.  'Bitmap' images made up of pixels are converted to .gif by the program

The next picture below is a .jpg image.  These are photo-realistic images containing a huge number of colours.  If you have a photo to include on the web it should be saved
 as a .jpg image.

This is a reduced size photo image 100*100 pixels. It loads fast.  The size is often 
called a 'thumbnail' image. (see Layout & Graphics 3)

This .jpg image below of Stomness Harbour was originally a large detailed .bmp photo image and shows the quality you can have on a web page.

Animated gif images such as 'Lisa' below  are used to add interest to web pages, but these can be annoying!
