up the structure ?

You start by going to File menu and
selecting 'New'
When you are first starting a web site to be made up of more than one page you
should select 'New Web'. This will set up the folder and you should name your first
page as Index.htm. This is normal practice for a web site.
If you are adding a page later on you go to 'File - New - Page'
- Simply type what you want at
the cursor
- Save in the normal way by
giving the page a name. Call the first or home page Index.htm
- Subsequent pages should be
given meaningful names ending with .htm to show they are web pages
A number of font styles and sizes are set up by the program. The
default font is already set up (see 'Tool -Options' menu) as Times new
Roman. The 'normal' size is HTML size 3 (12 points). There
are also a number of pre-set heading sizes. Size 6 is the smallest and size 1 is
the largest. Look at the formatting toolbar illustration below. This contains
the normal formatting options and allows you to set the emphasis (bold,
underlined and italic) as well as the font colour and justification for the
text.

You can override the pre-set
sizes by setting whatever font you want in the font style and size boxes. This
has been done here with the main body text in Arial and the headings remaining
in Times New Roman.
If you look at the HTML code you
will see the sizes are referred to as numbers. This is size 4 (equivalent
to 14 points)
Web sites need to have a
structure to work. Have a look at the diagram
below. This shows that web sites are set up with a hierarchical
structure. The first page created is normally called the home or index page
and this will contain links to all the others.

Most of the pages
(including this one) are linked directly to the Index page from where they are
loaded as required. Several pages are linked only to Layout2 and
Uploading.
- First you need to have made some pages.
- Secondly you will need to go
to navigation view
- There you will see a list of
your files on the left and the index page graphically shown in the right
hand pane.
- Now pick up (by clicking and
holding down left mouse button) and drop the selected page over the index
page a structure link is defined.
- You will need then to set up
links (hyperlinks) between the pages so you can navigate between them.
Look at the diagram below.
You will see the navigation bar. This can be used for viewing the whole
structure or just parts of it (sub trees). You can also see all external
links. (outside the site to other sites)

- Put cursor where you want text
to appear.
- Go to Insert menu - File
- The Select File dialogue box
will allow you to navigate to where the file is stored.
- Now look for the type of file
used for the file you wish to import. Word processing files can be
saved in various formats (.doc, .txt and .rtf are most likely). Look
under ' All Files *.* '
- If you import a .txt file you
will be asked what format you want to convert to. Select 'normal
paragraphs' or 'normal paragraphs with line breaks'. You will need
then to add any emphasis, underlining etc
Back to To
- Put the insertion point where
you want the picture to appear
- Click Insert menu - Picture
- You are given the choice of
selecting from either 'clip art' or from 'file' You can select from
Microsoft Clip Gallery or from a file saved from a art program to file
- When the clip art is inserted
if you click on it you can increase or decrease its size by clicking on one
of the black editing squares surrounding it and then 'dragging' it to a new
size (hold down left mouse button whilst moving it.). You can also
format it left, centre or right side of the page.
- Have a play with Bart below!!
(only in the editor)

- You can see your page as it will appear on the web by clicking on the
Preview tab at the bottom of the editor screen. This will not however
allow you to use any links set up.
- To see it properly you need to use the browser you will use on the
web. To see the page in Internet Explorer click on the icon on the
Standard toolbar to the right of the printer icon
- How you page appears depends
on the resolution of a computer's display. To synchronize your page to
your display go to File menu and select 'Preview in Browser'. Here you
can select the browsers set up on your computer and see what the page looks
like in different resolutions. 'Default' sets display to how your
computer is set up.
