Using the Site Panel Options

In Dreamweaver MX 2004 to open this site structure panel go to Window - Files

You can select in the Site menu whether to see site file or site map

A plus sign next to a folder shows that the file has links to other folders and files

The site here is called 'Overseas' The Files button on the left will show Remote and Local files if connected to the fileserver. The files button selected in the diagram show local file list and site map.

The menu options in Site diagram

You will see that there are numerous formatting options.

File menu allows you to create new files/folders for your site structure, save the site structure, rename, delete and preview files.

Site Menu allows you to create new site, edit existing site

(1) Get/Check Out/ Put etc. are all commands to do with uploading the site, as explained below for the icons.

(2) New Site and edit site are commands to set up or alter a site structure.

(3) Check/Change Links Sitewide allows you to manipulate links throughout the site.
Change Links allows you to change or correct a link throughout the site.
Check links allows you to see the status of the links

  • Broken links do not work and need to be replaced or repaired (have a look at the 4 broken links on this site!)
  • External links gives you a list of external URLs on the site.
  • Orphaned files have no incoming links

(4) Reports - Dreamweaver can find or make reports on various aspects of the site or just a page.
Reports are available on things like untitled documents, empty tags and design notes
(You make design notes by turning them on in when first defining the site. You add them from the File menu)

(5) Synchronize is a facility to make sure your files are up to date both locally and on the web.
Open the Site Window and select the files to be checked
Select Synchronize command from menu and follow instructions.
Be careful to preview first before making changes.
