To make a page you don't have to use tables/cells.
You can type directly onto the page and format the text using the Property
Inspector. You can also insert images directly.
- Set up the page background colour in Modify/Page
Properties or insert an image as background.
- Type directly and format in the Property Inspector
You will however have very little control over the
layout, apart from the normal word processing type controls. This is why
most pages are made up using tables/cells or frames.
This page has four tables
- The main table contains this
text. It is set to 100% width in the Property Inspector (Drag
out the table, select it by clicking on its edge and then switch
to Standard View to do this)
- The second table contains
the navigation. This is set on top of the other (nested). It was
inserted by putting the cursor where it was needed. Then switch
to Standard View and go to Insert Table (this one has one row
and 4 columns)
- The third and fourth tables
contain this written content and were laid alongside each other
in Standard view right and left aligned.
- The main table and the navigation table are
centred Select (go to Standard View - centre in Property Inspector)

Having
tables allows the use of different backgrounds, borders and helps
control layout of text/images.
It also allows a more flexible layout of the content than is possible
on simple pages.
